Diciembre de 1776. Antonio Soler, fraile jerónimo del monasterio de El Escorial y músico de la Corte, escribe una carta dirigida al padre General de la orden. En ella, se queja amargamente de las presiones que recibe en el monasterio y solicita su traslado a otro pues incluso teme por su vida. ¿Cómo soporta un hombre ilustrado, culto, inquieto y piadoso, las maledicencias y los comentarios, las envidias y las burlas dentro de una comunidad pequeña y cerrada, la de un monasterio jerónimo del siglo XVIII? En una situación que actualmente clasificaríamos como «acoso laboral», el equilibrio mental del padre Soler llegó a extremos cercanos al colapso. Desde una perspectiva literaria, Francisco Delgado trata de acercarnos a la situación del célebre músico. Tras un exhaustivo trabajo de documentación junto con su experiencia como escritor y sus amplios conocimientos de psicología, el autor, en palabras de Miguel Joaquín Calvo «nos ofrece la verdad del alma humana, de un alma humana específica en un contexto determinado, que nos aproxima más al auténtico ser del padre Soler que todos los datos, los epistolarios y los documentos que reposan en las bibliotecas pero que sin la interpretación narrativa, permanecen mudos al núcleo humano del personaje».
